Did we really just do that?!
There are a lot of words you could use to describe our cycle experience on Saturday – gruelling, horrific, scary, exhilarating, painful, perhaps even foolhardy. Intensive care was certainly on the cards for the Ballintoy coastal section as we struggled not to be blown off our bikes, while being battered by 30mph winds and horizontal driving rain! Without doubt the worst conditions either of us have had to endure in the saddle.
As Steven commented afterwards: "
Absolutely brutal – physical and mental torture – giving up cycling – for this week anyway!"
Many hardened club cyclists gave up after 3 or 4 miles but as we were on a mission to raise much needed funds for Action MS, turning back was not an option. Royal Marine Commandoes – 99% need not apply.
To say this ride was at times a mammouth struggle, would be an understatement. At one stage Steven was hallucinating getting to the finish line and throwing his bike over it! You would think two lawyers would have had more common sense.
We feel we can now relate in some small way to the constant struggle Multiple Sclerosis sufferers have to cope with every day.
Strangely we actually enjoyed the ride – well the last 6 hours out of the 10 it took us anyway! We may even look back at our adventure with fond memories - one day.
We are supporting Action Week: Taking Action for MS and hope to raise as much money as possible for Action MS, a fantastic local charity which aims to empower people with MS to take control of their own lives.
